This newly created position leads, manages, and continually improves world class Food Safety for the Friendly’s Retail and Manufacturing Division value stream. This role leads the organization in the continual development of a world class food safety vision and accompanying strategy implementation.  The QA Director is a critical member of the Retail and Manufacturing Management Team and partners with manufacturing and distribution to strengthen the quality and safety culture within the organization.  Specific areas of responsibility include all internal and external audit processes, regulatory affairs, manufacturing quality control, product quality and sanitation. This role manages a team of 2 direct reports and 3 indirect reports.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead, manage, and continually improve all Food Safety processes for Friendly’s Retail and Manufacturing Value Stream to achieve designated key performance indicators. 
  • Manage the quality audit processes for the Retail and Manufacturing Value Stream to ensure standards of quality, sanitation and overall food safety are met.  Audit responsibilities include both internal (eg. HACCP, GMP) as well as external (e.g. GFSI, custom pack partners).
  • Serve as primary interface with external regulatory organizations (state health/regulatory agencies, FDA) as well the rabbinical council to assure compliance in manufacturing / warehousing, specifically with regard to labeling requirements and allergen related issues.
  • Manage the manufacturing quality control processes, conduct quality control audits, provide recommendations regarding food safety and food quality issues, and oversee all aspects of the microbiological testing laboratory.
  • Lead and manage the product recall processes for the Retail Value Stream.  Specific responsibilities include developing, documenting, and maintaining all recall related policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains master sanitation schedule for the Wilbraham manufacturing and distribution facilities.  Provides training and instructions on detailed sanitation activities and works with manufacturing and distribution management in execution of these activities.  Maintains electronic database to insure ongoing compliance.               

REQUIRMENTS:

  • BS in Food Science, Engineering or related field and 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in a world class, multi-site food manufacturing company (preferably in the dairy/ice cream industry).  5+ years experience in Quality Assurance related role.
  • Best-in-class knowledge of Food Safety systems such as Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP, sanitation theory systems, allergen control, packaging integrity, labeling, FDA requirements, recall and traceability.
  • Demonstrated company-wide impact through leadership and support of Quality Systems initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of product and process specification development and implementation, as well as food laboratory equipment and methodologies, preference given to experience in a dairy environment.
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and present at all levels of an organization as well as with external business partners and regulatory agencies.
  • Strong ability to oversee, guide and manage multiple and diverse projects to completion.
  • Strong expertise in the use of PC based information systems.

The individual in this position is responsible for developing a Quality Management System (QMS) for a growing food company based on ISO system models. The person is coordinating all activities between the consulting company and our client while preparing, revising and implementing the QMS program that will assure successful ISO 9001:2008 and Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22’000). The person serves as the QMS representative and ensures the effectiveness of the systems. The individual is responsible to coordinate and manage management reviews, internal audits, the maintenance and revision of the QMS Documentation. Additionally, the individual supports the R&/QA team in food safety related activities.

Quality Management System Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, revise and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).  Ensure successful first ISO 9001:2008 certification and successful surveillance audits in our chocolate manufacturing facility.
  • Develop, manage, implement and maintain a cohesive FSSC 22’000 program to ensure compliance with the highest standards in food safety.
  • Create ISO QMS awareness for all employees through coordination of internal trainings.
  • Manage the development of all ISO 9001 and FSSC 22’000 specific documentation. Assure revision and maintenance of documents is compliant to the ISO requirements and established in a consistent and accurate way. Assure standardized and centralized data management.
  • Ensure the compliance of all functions as per the ISO system standards to guarantee successful certification.
  • Develop measuring tools in collaboration of all functions to monitor the process performance and check on effective implementation of the QMS. Initiate and monitor necessary corrective and preventive action and create transparency in this process to all related functions.
  • Responsible for the communication of non-conformities to the Sr. Management team and monitor the corrective actions.
  • Responsible for representing the management during certification and surveillance audits and manage all coordination with the certifying body.
  • Assure the internal awareness for customer requirements and coordinate QMS related actions and documentation accordingly.

Audits and Reviews

Prepare and conduct regular Management Review meetings to assure transparency in regards to process improvements and non-conformities.
Perform and coordinate internal audits, conduct regular reviews and assure internal auditors are regularly trained compliant with ISO Standards.
Manage the non-conformity reports and monitor corrective actions to support production and business process improvements.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Expertise and working knowledge in ISO standards preferable 9001:2008

Production Manager for a local, growing privately owned business, that specializes in manufacturing liquid Personal Care and Household products, for a wide variety of regional and nationally recognized brands.

The business operates from a 100,000 sq. ft. facility and is currently manufacturing on a single shift with 5 liquid filling lines (fillers, cappers, labelers, coders and packing equipment) and additional filling equipment for liquids, creams and lotions, including tube fillers.
As a key member of the companies’ Management Team the successful candidate, in this newly created role, will report directly to the General Manager and will work in close collaboration with the Operations Manager as well as the Chemical & Compounding Manager, and the Quality Assurance Manager.

Seeking a Hands On individual with the ability to lead, motivate and develop people and with knowledge and significant experience managing a similar sized production operation (cGMP environment: Liquid Personal Care / Household products, or Food or Beverage experience preferred).

The person should have direct experience managing production lines and possess a “production vision" and the ability to troubleshoot problems and increase production efficiency.

The successful candidate will have a record of successful career progression to Management of both people and process.

Working Knowledge of Process Mapping / Process Control with a demonstrated knowledge of Continuously Improving production (both people and process/equipment) - Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Certification is a plus for the qualified candidate.

Job Summary:
Supervises and coordinates activities of sanitation team members in a food processing facility. This position reports to the Sanitation Division Manager.

Responsibilities:
Includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Cleans and inspects all process equipment for conformity to federal and state sanitation laws and plant standards in an efficient manner.
  • Directs cleaning of equipment and work areas, including periodic checks of CIP equipment that does not get broken down daily, to check for effectiveness of cleaning.
  • Works closely with chemical consultant in reviewing chemical usage and operating procedures as well as keeping abreast of new technology.
  • Inspects premises for unsanitary practices and conditions.

  • Compiles required reports regarding regular inspections, sanitation violations, and steps taken to resolve deficiencies.  Routes reports to designated plant personnel.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Directly supervises a sanitation team of approximately 24 staff
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training permanent and temporary employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Performs daily review of HACCP, SSOP, and other QA related records to assure conformance to requirements.

  • Coordinate the assignment and completion of daily and other than daily Quality Assurance tasks.
  • Act as liason for regulatory (USDA /FDA) inspectors.
